Overlake was formed in late 2012 in Jersey City, NJ, after founders Tom Barrett (guitar, vocals) and Lysa Opfer (bass, backing vocals) discovered they had something special. “We were both in another band together, but would stay after practice and mess around and jam and stuff. We just clicked and started writing the songs we knew were always meant to write.” Those songs—characterized by catchy harmonies, gauzy melodies, and reverberating walls of sound—were imbued by the duo’s mutual love of college rock from the late 80’s/early 90’s and provided the foundation for the band’s nine-track debut album, Sighs (April 2014).
“While the influences [My Bloody Valentine, Yo La Tengo, Sonic Youth] are apparent, Barrett and Opfer take a different path with them, and their vocal interplay really makes things appealing. Sighs is a warm and fuzzy treat. (Like an autumn sweater? Perhaps.)”
Through a mutual friend, they located powerhouse drummer Nick D’Amore, whose ferocity added a unique strength and energy to the band’s sound. Overlake will be touring the South and Midwest in November and then extensively through 2016, in support of both Sighs and a new 7”, Travelogue/Winter Is Why, that was released on October 30, 2015. The band is currently working on new material for a second full-length record, which they plan to release late 2016.
