“If Minor Threat’s Ian Mackaye did drugs you’d have something close to Ben Franklin” – Zac Clark Rockertycoon
There couldn’t be a more perfect description of Ben Franklin. Their songs pack a powerful punch – quick and to point, hooks galore, tasty harmonies, rifftastic, and none of that preachy straight-edge nonsense. That how we like things here at Killing Horse, and Ben Franklin deliver it in spades.
Self described as “gonzo rock” and sometimes “Fraggle Rock”, they also add that “Leftists, libertarians, nerds, hackers, drugs, booze, sex, we’ve got it all!”. Hailing from Brooklyn, NY,Ben Franklin released their debut CD, Optimist, in 2009 on their own Lady Liberty Sounds imprint. It didn’t take much convincing before our ears at Killing Horse took notice. Within seconds of hearing the opening track, “Tell Me How You Really Feel”, we knew this was a group that was a perfect match.
Their debut on Killing Horse came in the form of 7″ EP, Urgency, released in February of 2011. It picks up where Optimist left off, with even more hook-y riffs, politically and socially charged lyrics, and some of the best rock you’ve heard this decade. They are currently beginning work on a follow-up EP, to see release sometime in the next few months.
